What a filing does and does not tell you

  • A filing is a document, not a business. An entity may be formed only to hold property or for a project that never starts. The state does not record whether an entity operates.
  • No industry and no contact data. State filings carry no industry code, phone number, email address or website; these have to be added from other sources.
  • Not every new business files. Sole proprietors can trade under their own name or a fictitious name without forming an entity.
