Data and statistics

Florida business statistics

How many businesses Florida has, where they are, how many are founded each year and how Florida compares with other large states, from official sources. Every figure on these pages names its source and date. These are official market-size statistics; per-industry counts from our own dataset are still being compiled.

How to read these figures

  • Three different counts. The state counts registered entities, the Census Bureau counts establishments (locations with paid employees) and firms. They answer different questions, so their totals differ widely.
  • Market size, not our data. The figures show how large a county or an industry is. Our own record counts will be published on the page Data status once the Florida dataset exists.
  • Reference year. Census figures describe the latest year published: 2023 for businesses with paid employees (County Business Patterns), 2024 for businesses without (Nonemployer Statistics); state figures carry the date on which the state updated them.

Where the planned Florida data comes from is described in the data sources and methodology; background articles are in the blog.
